W3C

The World Wide Web Consortium helps establish the standards that make the World Wide Web work. Some will tell you that if everyone wrote their web pages to conform to the W3C standards, the web would be a better place. Im one of those people. So if you make web pages and haven't already, go get a copy of those HTML and CSS specifications, and use the validation services on your pages. You too could be amazed at the mess Internet Explorer displays when pointed at your beautifully constructed and valid web pages which every other browser you tried renders just fine.

tinyurl.com

[ tinyurl.com ]

Isn't it annoying when people email you really long links to web pages that get line wrapped and break so you can't click them, and they're a real pain to copy and paste to your browser? Well don't do it to other people - use tinyurl.com and turn that 4 line url in to something dinky.

erinpower.com

Erin's a friend of mine who takes pictures, some of which she puts on her web site where you can look at them.

freewire.net

A pay as you go dial up ISP which doesn't make you register. You don't have to fill in lots of tedious on-line forms, you don't have to install any pointless software, all you need is to know their phone number.

Geekserve

Another pay as you go no registration dial up ISP. Connection number is 0845 1257942 login and password are both 'geekserve'. This may or may not work. I can't find the site any more and lack dial up facility to test.

Weebl and Bob

Flash animations depicting the everyday happenings of Weebl and sometimes Weebl's friend Bob. Can sometimes be spotted on MTV and MTV2.

Matazone

Flash animation shenanigans.

Apple

Probably best known for their iPod range and iTunes, Apple also make computers. Their OS, Mac OS X, gives you the benefits of an easy to use aesthetically pleasing GUI and the power of a Unix CLI environment. Apple and their OS are not without their faults, (no # character on the keyboard, iTunes DRM controversy, an OS X release cycle arguably too fast for it's own good etc), but if you buy an Apple computer you get a really nice coherent package of a nice looking machine, an OS that doesn't keep bugging you to 'sign up...' for or 'take a tour of...' and a good collection of bundled software which puts the random incoherent selection of third party stuff you get with the average PC to shame.

IMDB

Internet Movie DataBase. Reviews, trivia, mistakes, cast listings blah blah blah.

Wikipedia

On-line encyclopedia. It's biggest strength, and arguably it's biggest weakness, is that anyone can contribute to or edit articles which appear there.

Bugmenot

A collection of usernames and passwords for those annoying websites that insist that you register just to view their content.

dodgeit.com

[ dodgeit.com ]

No registration, totally disposable, receive only email addresses. Just make up an address ending @dodgeit.com, use it where you feel the need and pick the mail up at the site. Genius.

XE.com Currency Converter

Useful for working out just how much that purchase in US$ is going to cost you in real money, or maybe just satisfy your curiosity as to how many Venezuela Bolivares you can get for a Jamaica Dollar.

The On-Line Guitar Archive

People work out tabs for songs and upload them. Other people download them.

manybooks.net

Download books on which the copyright has expired or who's authors have made them available for free in electronic format.

Darik's Boot and Nuke

Selling or scrapping your computer? Got a virus ridden Windows installation and want to make sure you've really got rid of all the nasties before you re-install? Then wipe the harddisk with DBAN. "DBAN prevents or thoroughly hinders all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis."
